Fishing in Video Games (Cross-Posted)

(Talking about fishing in games began to be my niche but I wouldn’t have figured it out unless I kept creating posts around it)

Whenever I play games that offer fishing as a profession or even a mini-game and I will usually gravitate towards doing that as I play just to see how in depth the developers designed it, some games it’s just point and click and you get fish and other times you have to actually participate! And if its an online game there might be other players in the area fishing as well and could even strike up a conversation.

In Runescape the fishing was point and click and the docks often looked like this:

Sometimes a random event would occur and cause a brief panic amongst the fishers but eventually everybody got back into their spots and resumed fishing.

Mabinogi is a anime social MMO where the games focus was to live a fantasy life and it had so many professions some players who have been at it for years still haven’t mastered everything. The fishing system in that had a mini game where you have to keep the fish in a box for a set duration of time, the bigger the fish the harder it was keeping it in the box.

There was also a chance to reel in rare items or pieces of clothing that could be repaired and sold to other players, I fished up a teardrop kite shield that had other players asking me about it.

Fishing in Monster Hunter was drop a line and if the fish was huge you would have to briefly fill a meter before you could pull it out of the water, fishing had a more practical use and gave out different rewards like scales that could be combined with other items to make them better or even ingredients help make a weapon.

In some Monster Hunter games the size of the fish would be catalogued and sometimes the objective would be to catch a certain size.

Now as I play the New World MMORPG I once again find myself spending time fishing just to see how the system works. It’s a bit more intricate as you have to choose how far you throw your line out and once a fish is hooked reeling it in is a mini game where if the line is pulled too long you risk losing the fish and if the line is slack for too long the fish gets distance.

The boot was probably the hardest thing to reel in if I am being honest.

Fishing in a game is surprisingly relaxing considering most games might have you on edge wondering where the enemy is and the feeling of obtaining items from fishing is always a treat, even the conversations that pop up from nearby players can lead to interesting territory.

What are your favorite side objectives to do in a game? is there anything you look for when you engage in the activity, something that tells you the game took that extra step?
